Runnymede Disabled Swimmers (RDS) is a transport group founded in 2016 to assist disabled people in Runnymede to attend ‘Surrey Dolphins’ swimming sessions at Woking Pool in the Park. ‘Surrey Dolphins’ has now ceased to exist so we are setting up our own swim session at Woking Pool in the Park for our members. We would like continue to provide supported swimming and maintain the social and mental well-being aspects that are gained as a bi-product of reaching out to isolated members of our community.
We are looking for volunteers over the age of 18 who are willing to assist people with various physical disabilities caused by conditions such as Stroke, MS, blindness, broken backs etc. Being a confident swimmer is essential. The sorts of tasks you may be asked to assist with may be to put someone’s clothes in a locker, fetch them a buoyancy aid, guide them into the water and keep an eye on them as they exercise. Training will be given to whatever level of assistance you wish to give. We operate as a social group of members and associate members (volunteers) who work together to ensure the smooth running of the session.
